SeoContest2008

SeoContest2008 is another contest of SEO contest. It’s similar to NgaduTrafik 2007 previously in Indonesia.

UK Webmaster World SEO Contest host this contest and open for everyone with the first prize $1000. My article just posted on 19 February, which mean 19 days late from it’s opening 1 February. At the moment, not too many Indonesian follow this contest, well … if I check the google search engine.

This contest will be close at midnight 1 April 2008. The keyword is “seocontest2008″. To decide the winner, just simply look at Google results on midnight of 1 April (kind of April’s Fool huh? lol!) for this exact url

Please be remember, you have to logout from your google account first, to see the correct result of this. Otherwise, your personalized search result will appears.

Of course judges will look for some cheating that may used by the winner. But I think the competitor will not do such that job.

SEOContest2008 – my personal target and as a self learning

With late page creating and late submit, I am not hoping too much winning this SEO Contest 2008. I also made a mistake earlier that I am using using Indonesian language while the language competed are in English. But as part of self learning of SEO, I will continuing to optimize this page (and only this page) and try to learn day by day what Google doing with this new keyword seocontest2008. So my personal target is only stay listed at the top 100 of this contest.

There’s some alleged positive base on my learn:

• domain name or sub domain using the keyword is positively has great influence
• Using permalink url (such as ‘seocontest2008.htm‘) also has showing positive effetcs.
• A lot of keyword on the page seem also make Google think that the page is very relevant with that keyword. Just be careful, too much keyword will lead you to be banned as spam site.
• Google also loves new site. Some of new site, even not getting to the top, but seen listed in top 100 for several days and getting dimmed from day to day.

I am not yet checking the amount of links from ‘temporary’ first place sites. For this page, I am plan to create link from my own sites.

Temporary position of SeoContest2008 (not really updated)

Until today, My page hasn’t yet a good position in google.com.
Update:
- 24 Feb 2008, in 512th position… (Too bad …)
- 27 Feb 2008, getting up to 75th pole.
- 29 Feb 2008, down to 106th.
- 2 March 2008, down to 77th.
- 8th March 2008, in 22nd position according top 100, but my check here in 7th. (is there any different result using exact URL?)

On local Google (google.co.id), I have good SERP. Seem my site has been identified as Indonesian. My site use to be in Indonesian server before I move to HostGator. Later on, after I try to tell google that this page are in English, my SERP on google.co.id drastically reduced to somewhere, while in google.com, still in position.

I also monitoring Yahoo result, just for my references. I hope I find some clue for optimizing for this search engine.

Finding the dirty tricks used by contestant

There’s a dirty tricks used by one, may be more, contestant (I just found it on top contestants). The tricks is redirecting using 301 from established sites which already has very good links. I also got confirmed from Temi (UKWebmasterWorld) that this is disallowed and the contestant will be disqualified.

Next, I find out the different tricks (or changing the tricks): “Silently 301’s redirecting into the new site”. This is the method to make GoogleBot to see 301 redirecting into new site, while regular visitor (normal browser) see the normal site. This is a cheap and dirty technique. Too bad, Google is a bit late to punished the site that using this method.
